The most common mistake when measuring a replacement door is measuring the door itself.

The correct way to measure a door is the rough opening. However, if the door is still on its hinges, Measure from outside the door jam both in width and height

Is your door left or right handed?

When you look from the outside back at your home, whichever side the hinge is on, determines left or right hand.
